Fall Festival 2025

Every November, Musical Keys Piano Academy hosts its annual Fall Festival, a special event designed to encourage music study and dedication among students. The festival provides a valuable opportunity for students to perform, receive professional evaluations and feedback, and compete for cash awards recognizing outstanding performances.

Important Deadlines

  • Registration Opens: September 1, 2025

  • Registration Fee & Forms Deadline: October 1, 2025

  • In-Person Performance Date: November 2, 2025

Registration Process

​Step 1: Fill out the registration form
Step 2: Print out the completed form and submit it, along with the $35 entry fee (Cash or Check payable to Ngan Chan), to your teacher by October 1, 2025.

Eligibility

1. There are NO age restrictions for entrants.
2. Students must be currently studying with a Musical Keys Piano Academy teacher.

Repertoire Requirements

✅Repertoire Requirements

  • Number of pieces: Two original selections.

  • Contrast requirement: Pieces must contrast in style and preferably period.

  • Pieces need not be of contrasting periods if the student has NOT yet attained the level of playing easier works of master composers and the following requirements are met:

    • Both pieces contrast in style.

    • Both pieces are original works with a minimum of 12 measures.

    • Pieces are composed by different composers.

    • Pieces may NOT be selected from the same method (Piano Adventures, Alfred, Bastien, etc.) due to the difficulty in verifying the composer in methods with multiple composers.

❌ Prohibited Repertoire

  • Arrangements of:

    • Folk tunes (American or foreign)

    • Hymns

    • Pop songs

  • Simplified versions of larger works

  • Pieces from the same method

Performance Rules

  • Both pieces MUST be memorized.

  • Students not meeting repertoire or memorization rules may enter “for comments only.”

Time Limit

Please note: Time limits have been set for each grade. Please make sure that the playing time for both pieces combined does not exceed these limits. Judges may stop students as needed.

  • K-3rd grade: 5 minutes

  • 4th-5th grade: 8 minutes

  • 6th-8th grade: 10 minutes

  • 8th-12th grade: 12 minutes

Adjudication Process

  1. Performance Ratings
    Each student is judged individually, using one of the following ratings:

    • Superior

    • Excellent

    • Good

  2. Written Feedback

    • Judges will provide written comments on each performance.

  3. Certificates

    • Every student who performs for a rating will receive a certificate.

    • Outstanding performers will be chosen at the judge’s discretion, selected students will receive cash awards in recognition of exceptional performances

    • Students playing “for comments only” will not receive a rating or certificate.

  4. Closed Judging

    • No spectators (including parents or teachers) are allowed in the performance room.

    • Parents must remain in the waiting area during the performance.

  5. Rating Sheets & Certificates

    • Completed rating sheets will be held by the door monitor.

    • Teachers can pick up their students' rating sheets and certificates at the end of the day.
